Brick weep holes in Mississauga may look like small gaps or openings near the bottom of an exterior wall. In many brick-veneer systems, these openings serve an important purpose. They allow moisture within the wall cavity to drain outside.
Property owners sometimes mistake weep holes for missing mortar and fill them. Unfortunately, blocking an intended drainage opening can trap moisture behind the brick.
How Does Water Enter a Brick Wall?
Brick and mortar resist weather, but they are not completely waterproof. Wind-driven rain can enter small pores, cracks, or deteriorated joints.
A properly constructed wall manages this moisture through its cavity, flashing, and weep openings. Water travels downward before exiting through the weep holes.
Problems can develop when the openings become blocked by mortar, soil, paint, landscaping material, or previous repair work.
Signs of Blocked Brick Weep Holes
Look for weep holes near the base of the wall and above certain windows, doors, or other openings. Their location depends on the building’s construction.
White deposits, dark staining, deteriorated mortar, or dampness near the bottom of the wall may suggest moisture is not draining correctly. Interior staining can also indicate a building-envelope problem.
However, these symptoms do not prove that weep holes are the only cause. Damaged flashing, cracked masonry, sealant failure, or roof drainage may also contribute.
Inspecting Brick Weep Holes in Mississauga
A contractor should first confirm that the openings are intentional weep holes. Random gaps caused by missing mortar require a different repair.
BAKR Masonry provides professional brick, block, and stone repair in Mississauga. Our team can inspect the weep openings, mortar joints, bricks, flashing locations, and visible moisture patterns.
Repairs may include carefully reopening blocked weeps, replacing damaged masonry, or repointing nearby joints. The correct approach depends on the wall’s design and condition.
Do Not Fill Openings Automatically
Applying mortar or sealant to every visible gap can interfere with drainage. It may also hide the symptom while moisture continues accumulating inside the wall.
The City of Mississauga lists minor masonry repairs among projects that generally do not require a permit. However, re-cladding and larger structural work can have different requirements. Review Mississauga’s building permit guidance before beginning extensive work.
